How students can use artificial intelligence without outsourcing the thinking they still need to develop.

AI can explain, quiz, translate, organize, challenge, generate examples, and provide feedback. Those capabilities can support learning. But the same tool can also perform the exact cognitive work an assignment was designed to develop. The question is not simply whether a student used AI. It is: Which part of the thinking did the student still do?

THE 60-SECOND THESIS

AI is already part of students’ academic lives. Banning it does not teach judgment, and unlimited use does not guarantee learning. A better standard is to preserve human agency: think first, use AI for a defined purpose, verify what it gives you, transform the result through your own reasoning, and be able to explain the final work without the tool.

  • If AI gives a student the correct answer, has learning happened?

    Not necessarily. A correct product can hide whether the student practiced the reasoning, retrieval, writing, interpretation, or decision-making the task was meant to develop.

  • Is using AI for schoolwork automatically cheating?

    No. Rules vary by assignment, teacher, course, and institution. The educational question is whether the use is authorized and whether AI supports the learner’s work or substitutes for it.

  • What is the safest way to use AI without becoming dependent on it?

    Do meaningful first-pass thinking before prompting, use AI for feedback or challenge rather than automatic completion, verify outputs, and finish by explaining the idea in your own words.

  • Can AI improve critical thinking?

    It can when students are taught to question, compare, verify, and challenge outputs. Over-reliance can push in the opposite direction by reducing self-generated reasoning.

  • What should parents ask instead of “Did you use AI?”

    Ask: What did you ask it to do? What did you do before you used it? What did you change afterward? What did you verify? Could you do the core task without it?

  • Where should human tutors fit in an AI-rich world?

    A tutor provides context, judgment, relationship, accountability, and adaptive guidance. AI can propose; the tutor validates, interprets, and decides what actually helps the learner.

1 | THE THINKING GAP

The Work AI Removes May Be the Work That Was Supposed to Build You

Students have always looked for efficiency. Calculators, search engines, spell-checkers, video tutorials, and answer keys all changed how schoolwork gets done. Generative AI is different in one crucial way: it can now perform extended reasoning-like tasks in language - drafting, summarizing, explaining, coding, solving, and revising - at the exact moment the learner is supposed to be practicing them.

This is sometimes called cognitive offloading: using an external tool to carry mental work that would otherwise be performed internally. Offloading is not inherently bad. We use notebooks, calendars, calculators, and search engines because human attention is limited. The problem is offloading the part we are still trying to learn.

The right boundary depends on the assignment rules and the purpose of the work. This framework is a practical starting point, not a substitute for the teacher’s or institution’s policy.

Use AI Differently Depending on What You’re Trying to Learn

Writing

WEAK USE: “Write my essay on The Great Gatsby.” STRONGER USE: Write your own thesis and paragraph first. Then ask AI to identify the strongest counterargument, point out unsupported claims, or ask you Socratic questions about your evidence. KEEP HUMAN: idea generation, argument, evidence choices, voice, final judgment.

Math

WEAK USE: paste the problem and copy the solution. STRONGER USE: attempt the problem first. Ask AI for one hint, a different representation, or a new problem that practices the same concept. Then solve without looking at the prior answer. KEEP HUMAN: representation, strategy selection, calculation, checking, explanation.

Reading

WEAK USE: ask AI to summarize a chapter you were assigned to read, then skip the reading. STRONGER USE: read first. Use AI to test your interpretation, compare themes, define an unfamiliar concept, or quiz you on what the text actually says. KEEP HUMAN: comprehension, evidence gathering, inference, ambiguity, sustained attention.

Studying

WEAK USE: ask AI to produce perfect notes and reread them passively. STRONGER USE: ask AI to convert your notes into retrieval questions, generate mixed practice, simulate an oral quiz, and increase difficulty based on your errors. KEEP HUMAN: retrieval, self-explanation, error correction, spaced practice, metacognition.

4 | USE AI AS A SOCRATIC COACH

The Best Prompt May Be the One That Refuses to Give You the Answer

AI can be used as an answer machine. It can also be used as a questioning partner. The second use is often more compatible with learning because the student still has to generate, explain, test, and revise ideas.

TRY THIS PROMPT “Do not solve this for me. Ask one question at a time that helps me figure out what I know, what I’m assuming, and what I should try next. If I’m missing prerequisite knowledge, tell me what concept I need - but still make me do the reasoning.”

THE PURSUIT OF UNDERSTANDING A learner should not become merely better at prompting machines. The deeper goal is to become better at asking questions, evaluating evidence, recognizing uncertainty, explaining reasoning, and continuing the pursuit of understanding with or without AI.

5 | PARENTS, TUTORS & TEACHERS

The Conversation Has to Move Beyond “Don’t Use AI”

Students are already using AI at scale. The most useful adult response is neither panic nor permission without boundaries. It is explicit AI literacy: define what the task is meant to develop, make the rules clear, and teach students to use the tool in ways they can defend.

Five questions for a family, tutor, or teacher

  • What skill is this assignment actually trying to develop?
  • What part of the work must the student do unaided for that skill to grow?
  • What kind of AI assistance is permitted here?
  • How will the student verify accuracy, bias, sources, and reasoning?
  • What evidence will show that the student can now do more independently?

IF AI MATERIALLY SHAPED THE WORK When rules call for disclosure, the student should be able to say what tool was used, what it was asked to do, what parts of the output were accepted or rejected, what was independently verified, and what intellectual work remained the student’s own. Exact requirements vary by instructor and institution.

AI Use Is Widespread. Outcomes Depend Heavily on How It Is Used.

Recent evidence is more nuanced than either “AI is ruining learning” or “AI makes students smarter.” The pattern is increasingly about purpose, frequency, guidance, and whether the learner is still exercising judgment.

UNESCO’s guidance emphasizes a human-centered approach to generative AI in education, with human agency, critical thinking, ethics, privacy, inclusion, and age-appropriate use. OECD guidance similarly argues that students need strong unaided thinking skills as well as the ability to assess AI output critically.

TPP INTERPRETATION The strongest case for educational AI is not “AI can do the work.” It is “AI can create better conditions for the learner to do more meaningful work - with clearer feedback, more practice, better questions, and stronger reflection.”

PERSONAL PROFESSOR PERSPECTIVE

The Goal Is Not Independence From Tools. It Is Independence of Judgment.

MY GUIDING IDEA

The value of AI should not be measured only by how much work it can remove. It should be measured by whether the learner can think more clearly, ask better questions, make better decisions, and do more independently after using it.

I am not against AI. I use it, and I expect the students we teach to live in a world where increasingly powerful AI tools are simply part of everyday life. Pretending those tools do not exist is not a serious educational strategy.

But education contains a kind of friction that matters. Struggling to frame an argument, decide which mathematical principle applies, retrieve an idea from memory, determine what evidence matters, or explain why an answer makes sense can be frustrating. It can also be the very process through which capability is built.

That is why I keep coming back to a simple test: close the AI window.

Can the student explain the idea? Can the student reproduce the reasoning? Can the student defend the choices that were made? Can the student recognize when the AI is wrong? Can the student adapt the approach when the problem changes?

If the answer is yes, AI may have functioned as a coach, critic, practice partner, organizer, or source of useful friction reduction. If the answer is no, the assignment may look complete while the underlying capability is still incomplete.

My concern is not simply that AI will make students “lazy.” That explanation is too easy. The deeper danger is that students can become increasingly skilled at producing work that looks like understanding before the underlying understanding exists.

The answer is not to reject the tool. It is to teach students how to remain intellectually responsible while using it.
