What happens when short-term academic shortcuts become long-term habits of mind.

THE CENTRAL IDEA

Generative AI did not create dishonesty. It changed the cost structure. A student can now obtain polished answers, explanations, drafts, and solutions with almost no delay and often little visible evidence of the shortcut. The immediate reward is obvious: less effort, less discomfort, faster completion. The long-term concern is harder to see: repeated substitution can weaken the very habits education is supposed to build - reasoning, persistence, ownership, judgment, and responsibility.

THE 60-SECOND THESIS

AI cheating is not just a rule-breaking problem. It is a formation problem. When a student repeatedly receives the reward of thinking without doing the thinking, the student can begin to treat difficult cognitive work as something to escape rather than a capacity to develop. AI can be a powerful productivity tool after skills exist. It is dangerous when it becomes the substitute that prevents those skills from being built.

  • How common is AI use for schoolwork now?

    Very common. A nationally representative 2026 Common Sense Media survey found 70% of U.S. teens use AI for schoolwork; among teen users, 63% reported getting answers from AI in at least some situations. [1]

  • Does all schoolwork AI use count as cheating?

    No. Permission and purpose matter. Feedback, practice, explanation, and brainstorming may be permitted. Unauthorized answer generation or using AI to substitute for independent assessment crosses a very different line.

  • What is different about AI cheating compared with older shortcuts?

    Speed, scale, personalization, and camouflage. AI can produce custom work in seconds, making avoidance easier to repeat and harder for others to see.

  • What can repeated shortcutting do to a learner?

    Long-term causal evidence is still developing, but current research raises concern about reduced critical-thinking effort, overreliance, weaker ownership, and reduced practice with independent problem-solving. [3][4]

  • Why should society care about one student taking shortcuts?

    Because credentials, professions, and institutions depend on people actually possessing the capabilities their work represents - especially where other people may later depend on their judgment.

  • What is TPP's position?

    Use AI to extend learning, not replace it. TPP does not support using AI, tutoring, answer services, or other tools to disguise nonperformance as performance.

The Shortcut Is No Longer Rare - and Students Know Something Is Being Lost

The most important distinction is between AI use and AI substitution. Students can use AI to learn, and the same students can also use it to bypass learning. Recent surveys show both behaviors at the same time.

Frictionless Can Change the Learner's Relationship With Effort

Every difficult academic task contains some friction: confusion, boredom, uncertainty, planning, retrieval, writing, revision, persistence. Those experiences are not defects in learning. Often they are the mechanism by which capability is built.

NORMAL LEARNING LOOP I do not know -> I try -> I fail or hesitate -> I reconsider -> I persist -> I understand.

FRICTIONLESS SHORTCUT LOOP I do not know -> I prompt -> I submit -> I move on.

WHAT GETS PRACTICED In the first loop: persistence, self-correction, judgment, memory, ownership.

WHAT GETS REWARDED In the second loop: speed of escape, appearance of completion, and relief from discomfort.

BEHAVIORAL RISK The shortcut becomes easier to choose precisely because each successful shortcut lowers the immediate reason to change.

3 | WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN TO THINKING

The Long-Term Evidence Is Young - the Warning Signs Are Not

Generative AI is too new for researchers to prove what decades of AI-assisted avoidance will do to a developing generation. The responsible position is neither panic nor complacency. We should distinguish what is established from what current evidence is beginning to suggest.

UNESCO makes the larger principle explicit: AI education should protect human agency and should not allow AI to replace critical thinking. Its 2024 student competency framework warns that sophisticated AI can undermine agency and emphasizes human accountability for high-stakes decisions. [5]

THE QUESTION WE SHOULD ASK NOW What happens when a student repeatedly receives the reward of thinking without doing the thinking? We do not yet have a 20-year longitudinal answer. That is exactly why we should be careful about building the habit at scale.

4 | FROM THE INDIVIDUAL TO SOCIETY

A Credential Is a Promise About a Human Being

Grades, degrees, licenses, certifications, and professional credentials are not supposed to certify that a document exists. They are supposed to tell other people something about the capability of the person who earned them.

The societal risk is therefore not that humans will use AI. They will - and often should. The risk is that education produces people who are skilled at obtaining outputs but underpracticed at judging them.

A PARADOX WORTH AVOIDING The most information-rich generation in history should not become the least practiced at independently judging information.

PERSONAL PROFESSOR PERSPECTIVE

When Support Starts Becoming Complicity

Over the years, I have worked with students who struggled with procrastination, organization, time management, and the difficult transition from being supervised as children to managing themselves as adults. Those challenges are real. Good educators should respond with patience, structure, understanding, and practical support.

But AI has introduced a new temptation: it can make avoidance almost frictionless.

One former college student I worked with repeatedly postponed assigned reading and homework until the last possible moment. Increasingly, AI became a just-in-time solution - summarizing material that had not been read, producing work that had not really been developed by the student, and eventually being used in situations where independent performance was expected.

I ultimately walked away from the relationship. I could not continue doing my job as a Personal Professor while watching a student substitute AI for the responsibility, preparation, and intellectual effort the education required. I took the same position I would have taken with my own son: do not cheat simply because technology has made cheating easier, faster, or harder for other people to see.

What made the decision especially sobering was the student's intended professional path: medicine.

I hope and pray for the very best for that former student. I hope the concerns raised in this paper never become his story. Only time will tell what AI will mean for this generation. But the experience left me with a conviction that extends far beyond one learner.

Use AI to Learn More - Not to Pretend You Learned Something You Did Not

TPP POSITION TPP supports the responsible use of AI to extend learning, not replace it. The Personal Professor does not advocate or knowingly assist the use of AI, tutoring, answer services, or other tools to substitute for a learner's own authorship, reasoning, problem-solving, or independent performance when those abilities are being taught, practiced, or assessed.

PERMITTED IN PRINCIPLE Explanation, questioning, brainstorming, organization, feedback, study planning, practice generation, review, and other uses that preserve learner ownership - when allowed by the applicable rules.

NOT TPP'S ROLE Completing graded work on behalf of a learner, providing unauthorized assessment answers, disguising AI-generated work as original work, or helping a learner circumvent academic-integrity requirements.

THE OWNERSHIP TEST If you submit it as your work, you should understand it, be able to explain and defend it, and have done the core intellectual work your course expected you to do.

THE DISCLOSURE TEST When AI use materially shapes work and rules require disclosure, be able to explain what tool was used, what it contributed, what you changed, and what you independently verified.

7 | WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

Build Systems for the Challenge AI Makes Easier to Avoid

A strong anti-cheating position is not enough. Students need practical alternatives for the moments when procrastination, anxiety, disorganization, or overwhelm make the shortcut attractive.

    NAME THE TASK

    Write down what must actually be learned or produced before opening AI.

    START EARLIER THAN URGENCY

    Use a 10-minute start rule: begin the reading, outline, or first problem even if you do not feel ready.

    USE AI TO STRUCTURE

    Ask AI to break an assignment into steps, turn a rubric into a checklist, or schedule work - not to do the core work.

    ASK FOR A HINT

    When stuck, request one clue or question instead of a finished solution.

    CREATE AN UNAIDED CHECK

    After AI-assisted study, close the tool and reproduce the idea, solve a fresh problem, or explain the argument without help.

    Know what your teacher, course, institution, or exam permits before the pressure moment arrives.
